The first modern gun pouch was designed and patented in 1892 by John F. Nolan of Niagara Falls, New York. The design featured a leather belt-like strap with loops at each end that could be used to cinch the pouch shut. The patent was issued to Nolan for a pocket pistol holster with a concealed weapon system (CWS) comprising an open-top revolver and a magazines carrier behind the shoulder. This design became known as the "Nolan Pouch."
Arizona's Marana, located in the south-central part of the state on the banks of the Gila River, is one of America's earliest Hispanic settlements. The area that now makes up Marana was already inhabited by Pima Indians before Spanish explorer Hernando de la Vega explored it in 1540 and named it Las Vegas after his patron saint, Saint Vincent Ferrer. Las Vegas was first a small village comprising about thirty families who traded with Apache Indians; however, by 1821, it had grown to approximately two hundred residents. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location as a stop on stagecoach routes between Tucson and Phoenix and nearby Wells Fargo mines near Globe and Prescott. In 1825, Mexican soldiers stationed at Fort Yuma arrived atlas Vegas and ordered all inhabitants to leave within seven days or face execution. Most of Las Vegas' original residents converted to Catholicism under pressure from Mexicans living nearby. In 1830, Spain ceded California to Mexico after an unsuccessful attempt by Ulysses S. Grant to gain independence from Great Britain; as a result, Marana became part of what would become Arizona Territory under Mexican rule. By 1850, more than three thousand people lived in Marana; most were Indian converts who came westward during the gold Rush era looking for new opportunities in what was then uncharted territory. The biggest development in Marana occurred during this time period when entrepreneurs began developing irrigation systems around the Gila River basin which allowed for large scale agriculture and cattle ranching operations that led to a population growth rate of 50%. However, because land donations were not common among Mexicans who controlled much of Arizona Territory at this time there was little opportunity for non-Mexican settlers to take advantage of these developments without risk of being opposed or expelled from their homeland.
