As Arizona's oldest city, Marana has a rich history of firearms and ammunition. The city was founded in 1875 by Mexican immigrants who set up a ranch near the present-day town of Phoenix. The first gun shop in Marana opened its doors in 1892. In 1915, the Marana Pistol Club was formed to promote handgun use among citizens. The club continues to meet today and offers NRA courses and programming on firearm safety. Laws regulating firearms were passed in Marana in 1911 and 1916. These laws regulated the sale and possession of handguns, as well as the carrying of handguns within the City limits. In 1938, police began using guns instead of fists to disperse demonstrations that had been taking place throughout Phoenix at the time. After several confrontations between police officers and demonstrators, Mayor Harry Werts authorized purchase of 100 pistols with state money for use by law enforcement officers. This program continued until 1976 when all pistol purchases were banned due to public safety concerns over increased shootings without proper training for law enforcement personnel. The history of firearms in Marana, Arizona goes back to the early 1800s. The first firearms were used by Native Americans to hunt game. In 1869, a group of settlers named rancho de la Peralta was purchased by Manuel López and his brother-in-law José Antonio Reyes. On December 8, 1871, following a land grant from President Grant, Reyes founded the town of Marana on the east bank of the San Pedro River. The new town became an important center for cattle and sheep ranching and spawned many local businesses including a flour mill and store. By 1912, Marana had a population of over 100 people and was home to two banks, three churches, two schools (grades 1-12), two post office buildings (one with a mail service), four hotels and several agricultural enterprises such as a sawmill and gristmill. In 1949, Marana became part of the newly formed Phoenix metropolitan area when Phoenix was divided into four regions. Gun ownership in Marana increased as residents began purchasing weapons for self-defense or protection against crime in their neighborhoods. In 1976, Marana voters passed an ordinance requiring all handguns possessed in the city be registered with police within 24 hours after purchase. This ordinance remained in effect until 1984 when it was repealed due to concerns about gun control measures being introduced by then Mayor Bernie Macias during his term as mayor. In 1998, after years of planning by Mayor Macias’ administration and contributions from community members working together through Mesa County Sheriff’s Department Crime Prevention Unit patrols that operate out of various businesses throughout downtown areas; NRA presented City Councilwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers with a “ plaque honoring her work” at City Hall which read “For more than 15 years she has been fighting for common sense gun laws that will keep our communities safe – Cathy McMorris Rodgers” . On January 5th 2019 gunmen opened fire on multiple locations inside First Baptist Church located just south of I-10 & Arizon Avenue killing 6 people & wounding dozens more before leading law enforcement onto scene where they engaged shooter
Marana, Arizona is a tiny town in Coconino County, Arizona. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,827. The name is Spanish for " coral reef." The first Europeans to visit Marana were American missionaries in 1869-1870. They named the area Fort Marion after Rear Admiral Sir John marooned there on his HMS Beagle during the 1824 voyage of Discovery. In 1880, Marana became part of Apache Territory and the fort was abandoned. In 1886 a new post office called Fort Marion was established at the current location of Marana. In 1912, an irrigation ditch was built through what is now downtown Marana and water was brought from nearby Hopi Lake by wagon trains. A hotel and store were built near the ditch in 1914-1915, and another store on Railroad Avenue in 1935-1936. The last business open until 1978 was a convenience store on Speedway Boulevard which closed when Interstate 10 bypassed town limits that year. The population inside city limits had dwindled to 1 in 2000 when ZIP code 86260 (the old Post Office District) reached 1,000 residents as well

It lies on the eastern edge of Phoenix and its boundaries are based on that city's east side.The first European settlers in what is now Marana were members of the Mormon Battalion who left Nauvoo, Illinois in 1847 for Arizona. The town site was chosen by voting among their comrades as the best spot to build a new settlement after they surveyed all potential sites. After years of development, construction began on what would become known as "The City" in 1870. growth led to a need for more land so the community could expand beyond its original boundaries and so it could build sewage plants and other infrastructure necessary for a growing metropolis such as Phoenix. In 1917-1918, when Phoenix was still underdeveloped and only sparsely populated due to World War I rationing, Marana voted to annex itself into Phoenix making it one ofPhoenix' first townships or districts. In 1939-1940 during World War II when Phoenix became an urban area%,the government decided that Marana should be moved from its original locations onto adjoining public lands near Camelback Road and Pima Street north of 15th Avenue which would have allowed more housing development without any impact on existing businesses or homes; this decision helped spur economic revitalization in nearby areas including Sunnyside Village
