Marana, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 7,778 at the 2010 census. It lies on the upper end of the Tucson metropolitan area and is east of Phoenix. The first permanent European settler in Marana was John Sutter in 1847. He built a cabin on the site of present-day Marana after traveling through what is now Arizona and Nevada looking for land to explore. In 1848 he organized what became the townsite of Marana which coincided with his ranching operation on Ina Mesa Creek above Tucson. In 1853 a group of Mormon pioneers arrived in Marana from Salt Lake City and founded Brigham Young's Utah Mission there. They began farming and stock raising operations, but soon abandoned their settlement because of religious persecution by Mexicans who saw them as threats to their cultural hegemony over their ancestral lands south of the Gila River. Mexican settlers also attacked Mormon pioneers during this time; one man killed six Mormons while they were grazing near his home in 1865. In 1881zonnative ranchers established a cattle drive from Cholla de Oro north through Apache Junction then up into Cochise County to Prescott where they bought land for homesteads and started growing crops such as wheat, barley, oats and corn. By 1900 about 60 percent of the population lived outside urban areas due to commuting difficulties caused by railroads running through Phoenix and Tucson reaching Tucson before continuing eastward along Interstate 10 towards Phoenix proper (and eventually out into California). A new post office was opened at Marana on October 17, 1912; it remained open until it reopened at Anzalone Post Office on February 1, 1969. At that date Marana had a population of 575 residents including 184 people who lived off agriculture only: haymaking, planting flowers & vegetables etc.; no industry or commercial establishments had been developed since 1912 when mail service began between Anzalone (west side) & Tucson (east side). A telephone company building was erected here in 1957-1959 by Waddell Construction Co., Inc.; it later served as an EMS dispatch center for Valley Hospital until its demolition in 2003/2004oğanmaranaspeedway—the only major structure remaining from early days when community functioned primarily around agricultural production
