After World War I ranchers increased production while community leaders developed plans for development including housing, school systems, medical care and other civic needs; however politics intervened and development stalled until around 1960 when Interstate 10 bypassed town limits limiting access to residents for shopping and recreation opportunities outside of town center only about 1 mile away creating new opportunities for growth within town limits as well as new businesses opening up within walking distance of downtown Marana today. In recent years tourism has become an important part of locals' economy with visits from both locals and tourists accounting for about 60 percent (2015) of total revenue brought in by the business district.

The Marana Massacre took place on July 10, 1881, when a group of Apache Indians led by chief Manuel Diaz killed six white civilians and their interpreter, James W. Winchester, at the village of Marana. The massacre was retribution for the 17 February 1880 Tucson assassination of U.S. Deputy Sheriff William H. Townsend and his wife Mollie Townsend.
