The town was founded by Mexicans who were driven out of Tucson in 1912. In 1915, Marana became one of four towns to be organized along the Gila River as part of what was then known as "Pinal County". In 1924, the railroad came through Marana and pushed out most of the Mexican settlers. By 1930 there were only about 60 people living in Marana and it had a population of just 10. In 1957 Marana got its own ZIP code and has been growing ever since. The recession hit Marana hard in 2008-2009 but things have started to turnaround with new businesses starting up and more families moving into town overall since 2013.
Marana was founded by Pima County in 1912. It became a city in 1933. In 1935, it joined the United States as a result of the Wartime Acquisition of Arizona Act. Marana's population peaked at over 25,000 in 1945 but decreased to 14,000 by 1950. The city declined again until its population reached 4,500 in 1990.
