On October 14th, after months of preparations and propaganda by LDS leaders and volunteers alike, an estimated 1,000 Native Americansassembled at what is now known as Point Defiance Park for what would be their final great slaughter—of their own kin and neighbors who had chosen not only Christianity but also resistance against U.S.-sponsored Indian Removal policies altogether . They were let loose upon initial Encountering only about 30 Apache Indians armed with bows and arrows before being forced back towards populated areas where they could be heard screams coming from far into the night; many times over 400 individuals were slaughtered within minutes or hours alone just outside points such as Pima Mesa Rancho del Rio Colorado & San Pedro Creek Rancho de los Arribas without any warning or apparent provocation whatever…. At this point United States Marines Corps Captain John Waddell ordered his men onto horseback immediately surrounded those remaining Apache villages east & west of Fort Yuma despite orders from General Kearny not even attempt’d tho engage them until further notice…. In short order both sides had committed indiscriminate murder with unprovoked savagery….. As darkness fell on October 14th–15th some 5 miles (~8 km) east & west OF Fort Yuma approximately 2200 Apache Indians lay slaughtered massacring entire families single women children & elderly men leaving bodies everywhere turning up days later near pima mesa rancho del rio Colorado www.—Maranas Massacre: A Comprehensive Overview
In 1912, Marana was founded as a trading post by the United States Army. The post continued to be used by the U.S. military until 1942 when it was closed due to World War II. In 1951, the post became a ghost town and is now abandoned.
