Marana is a small town in Pima County, Arizona. It is located on the banks of the Gila River, about 25 miles north of Phoenix. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Marana were men from New Mexico who came to this area in 1867 and 1870. They named their new community after Manuela de la Hoz, Governor of Alta California (now Los Angeles), who had come toArizona during the Mexican-American War to help fight for Mexico against American forces. In 1893, Antonio Canizares moved from Sonora to Marana and started a grocery store there. canizares built a home near the center of town which still stands today as a part of Marana's history. In 1907, Don José Hernandez opened his own general store in Marana which became one of the largest grocery stores in Arizona. It was here that Hernandez met and married Clara Sanchez y Salinas, daughter of Don Francisco Sanchez y Salinas who owned one of Marana's biggest inns and also operated several other businesses including tanneries and groceries). In 1915 Hernandez sold his business to James Ahern Sr., son of James Ahern Jr., who ran it until it was closed by creditors in 1966. Ahern Elementary School was founded adjacent to Canizares' building (now Wells Fargo Bank) in 1916 as an addition to nearby Mrs. Fenton's schoolhouse which served as both public schools and homes for students when teachers couldn't find space elsewhere in town or outside Pima County! Today Ahern Elementary School remains one of Maranans proudest traditions along with our annual Homecoming Parade held on October 15th each year! From circa 1916-1966, many residents/ Employees/ Parents donated hours each week services at Mrs Fenton's schoolhouse - making her available for classes from 7:00am until 3:30pm! One such parent/ Employee / Parent volunteerism occurred back then called "Teacher’s Appreciation Day" - where every Friday morning between 7am-12pm all employees would gather outside Mrs Fenton’s schoolhouse steps arrivals thruouttown for an open classroom appreciation lunch with free tutus given out!!! Today we continue that tradition!!

Marana, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 1,652 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first mention of Marana comes from 1868 when it was known as "Marijuan". In 1912, because of the Mexican Revolution and consequent land grants given out to American settlers in that time period, Marana became part of Nogales County. In 1917, during World War I, a United States Naval air station was built at nearby Mesa Air Force Base; Marana became an integral part of this facility. On December 8th 1941 Marana was incorporated as a town by acts of Congress and named for General Pershing who had led American forces into World War I. On February 14th 1947 the US Post Office moved to its present location on Main Street and opened to public use; this marked the end of over 60 years as an agricultural community with no post office service! As today's Marana began growing rapidly due to its proximity to Phoenix, Nogales County decided it would be better if they split up Marana into two towns: one for men (west side) and one for women (east side). This decision caused what is now known as riff-raff on one side of town while more sophisticated people lived on the other side where there still wasn't enough separation! However despite some bad blood between these two sections over many years things have slowly began moving back together again with some recent renovations which are finally making way for new businesses etcetera.......
The first European to visit Marana, Arizona was the Spanish conquistador Juan Rodriguez de Castilla in 1540. The area that is now Marana became part of Mexico in 1821 when the Mexican War of Independence ended with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The United States acquired Marana during the Mexican-American War because it was a strategically located site on what is now U.S. Route 66. When Arizona became a state in 1912, Marana County was added to the state and its name changed to Arizona Territory
