Lake Havasu City, Arizona is a city in Mohave County, Arizona, United States. The population was 25,716 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The city was founded by Mormons in 1864 as Cedar Rapids on the banks of the Arizonan River. The name change to Lake Havasu City after American Indian chief Havasu and his followers destroyed a Mormon wagon train west of the river in 1868. The town site was chosen because it had high enough hills that water could not reach it from any other direction and its location made it vulnerable toattacks from Apache Indians who raiding parties passed through the area for food and scalps. In 1893, local ranchers organized a group of farmers to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) in what became known as the "Rancho Grande" region east of downtown for use as open space. In 1898, when Congress created Mohave County, Havasu City became one of its townships withinMohave County. The population grew steadily during early years of prohibition until World War I caused an increase in alcohol traffic and speakeasies that led to social unrest which led to increased law enforcement activity by Lake Havasu City police department officers; this also led to increased income for residents due to tax revenue generated from liquor sales taxes collected by state and federal governments impounded in Lake Havasus Water Treatment Plant

This group ofNavajo Indian people numbered more than 100 000 individuals and lived scattered throughout northeast New Mexico and parts of southwestern Arizona Territory including parts of Pima County including today's Lake Havasu City area. In 1916 they petitioned United States President Woodrow Wilson for recognition as a Nation within the United States but failed to receive any response. In 1920 they again petitioned Wilson but this time received positive acknowledgement and on February 14th 1922 became an autonomousNation with its own government composed of Chiefs and Governors appointed by tribal councils directly elected by members instead of through Wyandot elections held every four years like other Native American nations inside America At this time there were over 400 Navajos living in central Pima County outside of Tucson proper while also scattered among numerous reservations across New Mexico and southern Arizona Territory
