Lake Havasu City, Arizona is a city in the U.S. state of Arizona, located on the lower Colorado River about 120 miles (193 km) south of Phoenix and 520 miles (853 km) west of Tucson. As of the 2010 census, the population was 149,597. The name "Havasu" means “watercourse” in Navajo and Apache language. The city is named after General George Crook's column that passed through in 1867 during his march through Arizona to capture Cochise County from Pecos Indians. The town began as a trading post on the lower reaches of Bullhead Creek, which enters Lake Havasu National Park near present-day Havasu City proper. At first it was called Fort Sill because General John Blythe had built a fort there in 1868 to protect travelers making their way downriver to Payson and Prescott; but this name soon became common among settlers because they thought it sounded like Major General Stephen Kearny's heroic victory at Cerro Gordo over Mexico's forces two years earlier (1847). The post office was established at Fort Sill on April 15, 1870 by Colonel James Waddell with mail service starting May 1st In 1912, the town moved from its original location upstream along Bullhead Creek to its current site east of Interstate 10 just north of where it joins Lake Havasu National Park
