The city reached its peak during the 1930s when it served as the primary hub for both defense against Comanche raids and smuggling operations. However, after World War II,Lake Havasu City began to experience rapid growth and decline. In the 1990s, although there were still some efforts to keep development alive, most of the current infrastructure had been built by that time.

The site of what is now Lake Havasu City was first occupied by Native Americans in the area that now includes Phoenix.
