By 1883, when much of present-day Tempe had been developed – with only a few scattered Native American villages remaining – HAVASU CITY WAS ESTABLISHED AS A MUNICIPALITY WITH ITS OWN GOVERNMENT AND SCHOOL DISTRICT UNDER THE management OF THE MILITARY CORPS OF ENGINEERS FOR THE PROVINCE OF PHOENIX COUNTY. In 1912 the town became part of Pima County when that territory was created from parts of Apache Junction and Raton

The refuge also includes 27 miles (43 km) of BLM land that is home to several thousand acres (100 km²) of oak-hickory forest; six million acorns from three eastern redbud trees; 2 millionServiceberry plants; 675 species of moths; 350 types of birds; 100 amphibians/ reptiles; 40 fish species including 20 rainbow trout species found only in Arizona
