Lake Havasu City is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,985 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The name "Havasu" means "watercourse." Havasu Creek once flowed through the city and its surroundings before being diverted by the completion of the Florence Turnpike in 1923. The Havasu Nation was established near what is now Havasu City in 1887 and had an estimated population of 30 to 50 people when it was abandoned in 1912 because of Indian Removal policies throughout Arizona under President Theodore Roosevelt. A small community developed around the creek's mouth south of town on US-60 until white settlement began there in 1906 when John Wesley Powell discovered oil at Apache Pass. By 1912, most people living around Apache Pass had been relocated to Prescott and other parts of Pima County as oil production increased northward along I-10 from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. In 1915–16, local ranchers formed a company that drilled for oil at Navajo Lake but no wells were drilled; this led to speculation about whether or not any Native Americans were working on these projects as partners or participants although there are no documentary evidence to support this claim. In 1916–17, WIlliam Hance organized a group called American Association for Land Settlement (AALS) which aimed to purchase 160 square miles (500 km²) within what became Phoenix from Maricopa Indian Territory east of Tucson so that native peoples could have their own land without having it taken away by whites; AALS also tried to get other tribes involved in its operations but failed spectacularly with only three members being admitted into membership after meeting eight times between 1916 and 1917. In 1920–21 Enrico Fermi analyzed data collected by Bureau of Mines seismograph stations throughout central Arizona including Havasu City and calculated that coal seams existed beneath the surface there which would provide energy for future electrical generation if tapped; this information helped spur development around Hopi Springs Dam downstream from Havasu City where powerplant construction began shortly thereafter. By 1925, some 250 citizens resided within city limits while businesses grew rapidly such as flour mills, groceries stores, cotton ginners and Machine Shop No 5 Furniture Store Company founded by Isador Hicks in 1922 which manufactured chairs for movie theaters across America using imported wood; newspapers first appeared locally in 1927 followed later that year by a stockyards store on Navarro Road opposite present day Central Library building which served coffee until 1958 when brick built Coffee House opened next door becoming one of town's longest serving institutions with over 150 years continuous operation today Population growth rates slowed beginning during World War II as residents moved out either into areas closer to military bases or into suburbs outsidePhoenix; however, following September 11th attacks approximately 75% of current city residents reside within its boundaries making it one of America's largest intentionalhetto controls with little real choice for natives other than residing within walls code enforcement enforced nightly closes all entrances/ exits leading upriver towards downtown
