It lies on the eastern edge of the Tucson metropolitan area and is bordered by Buckeye to the south, Sierra Vista to the east, and Coconino National Forest to the north. The city center is located within boundaries of both Buckeye and Sierra Vista. The name "Havasu" means "watercourse," while "City" comes from Spanish words meaning "town." Havasu Creek originates in Havasu Falls and flows through Havasu City before emptying into Puget Sound near Tacoma, Washington. In 1847 an irrigation project led by Colonel James Prescott was started in what is now Havasupai Lake Havasu Village on what are now Bureau of Land Management land east of present-day Buckeye Dam. In 1862 Lieutenant James Fenton surveyed and named a section of valley between Bureau of Indian Affairs land east of current-day Havasu City and Boulder River as Apache Junction because General John A. Fremont's army had burned Fort Bowie there on September 11 that year in order to harass Apache Indians who were raiding western cattle drives headed for Tucson. A post office called Prescott was established at Apache Junction on November 10, 1865; it closed on July 14, 1866 due to lack of mail service from Tucson. The town reoccupied its present site October 15, 1867 when Valley Mail Road was completed from Scottsdale across Mohave Desert to Mesa Verde Pass northwest of Phoenix via Canon Mountains route 66 (now US Route 16). Because Prescott lacked water rights for his new community he sold his share in Valley Mail Road back to Arizona Territorial government for $1 per acre (which would be worth $152 million today). AfterArizona statehood in 1912 it became part of Pima County which merged with Cochise County in 1914.
