He called himself "Powell's Crossing" which later became "Powellville". By November 8th 1881 USGS Surveyor George Aikens had surveyed 2 towns namely: Powellville and Prescott Creek which lay along today’s route 66 between Prescott Valley (south) and Scottsdale (north). These settlements were not permanent however as soon afterwards General Crookappointed Lieutenant Colonel Harry Tilton as head of Department #2—the Territory ofArizona Military District—and orders were given for all civilian settlers within 7 miles (11 km) thereof “to move out or be destroyed” so as not to impede military operations during Waco Uprisingof April 26-291882 led by Texas Ranger William Sillimanagainst Mexican Army under Santa Anna Governor Antonio López de Santa Anna who ruled California territory at that time..
