In 1912, Kingman was founded as a mining town on Coyote Creek by Jens Jensen and others who had driven prospectors out of that area. By 1915, there were 2 businesses in town: a grocery store and an armory/banking institution known as First National Bank. That year also saw the first automobile drive into Kingman when Harry Averill bought a Ford from Ransom Mclntyre at cost effective $850 per car! 1st Sgt Harry Averill(left) & Capt Clarence Thomas drove their Ford into town for $850 each on October 26th 1916
Kingman was founded in 1912 by George Armstrong Kingman and his brother, Harry. The town grew quickly due to its location at the junction of two routes: the Santa Fe Railway and the Arizona Central Railroad. In 1916, Kingman became a city. It continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1950.
