Kingman, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is adjacent to Yuma County. Kingman is located on the east side of the Gila River and has a total area of just over . The first European to visit Kingman was Captain James Cook in 1778. He named it "Mona Lisa" after his employer's daughter. A post office called Kingman was established in 1868, and became a city in 1907. In 1912, Kingman incorporated as a town under the name Mona Lisa. The name change came about because residents found other towns with similar names difficult to remember. In 1971, Kingman acquired its current name from General George Armstrong Custer who fought at Battle of Little Bighorn during the American Civil War. Custer was buried at Fort Sill National Monument in Oklahoma City and his casket was brought back to Kingman for reburial here on October 10th, 1971 by order of then-President Richard Nixon as part of Veterans Day celebrations across America which included military funerals nationwide that year. Kingman, Arizona is a town in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 1,491 at the 2000 census. Kingman was founded by Manuel García and his family in 1887 on the site of an earlier rancho belonging to José María Sánchez. The first post office in Kingman was established in 1889. The name of the town originated from José María González de la Torre, who named it after General Santa Ana's Mexican Legion encampment near Tucson when he traveled through the area on their way to attack Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. The townsite that currently occupies most of Kingman's eastern side developed as a result of its location along Route 66 near what is now Interstate 10 and State Route 95A. This highway improved access to Indian Territory for settlers fleeing Spanish rule in south-central Arizona following US occupation during World War I. In 1925, when Judge Willis Halsey issued an order abolishing mandatory Hispanic zoning within Pima County, Kingman became one of several localities to petition for annexation into the county. On November 3, 1928, voters approved sending Kingsmen Creek eastward along I-10 from downtown to replace what had been a rural sparsely populated area with development around shopping malls and other services located southwest of Phoenix by then-County Manager Donahue and developers Harry Sears and Roy Tillery Sr.. AlthoughKingsman Creek never reached its original destination due to engineering problems caused by I-10 expansion as well as protests from residents about potential loss of open space necessary for new development (the creek crossed under overhead power lines at various points throughout its route), it nevertheless remains one of Phoenix's more celebrated urban legends; according to one account, people have even been known to jump out over the edge onto Interstate 10 just north of Downtown Phoenix in order try and catch a glimpse or touch the water below. In recent years much attention has focused on Kingman because it is home to two controversial archaeological sites: Mesa Verde National Park (northwest corner) and Chaco Canyon National Monument (southwest corner). both are part of Mesa Verde National Park but were not designated as such until after KINGMAN was annexed into Pima County; Chaco Canyon is still unofficially recognized as a national monument despite this designation being challenged by several locals including former Mayor Bob Moffitt who argues that much evidence suggests that early Native American cultures inhabited parts present within Chaco Canyon prior to European arrival which would have madeChaco canyon ineligible for inclusion within Mesa Verde National Park given its distance from Tucson proper. Although all three sites are currently unprotected archaeologically speaking due primarilyto ongoing dispute between preservationists and developers over whether or not they should be kept open while also potentially inviting vandalism they remain popular tourist attractions despite these considerations nonetheless

The Cold War led to a decline in business activity and population throughout the late 20th century; however, there has been recent resurgence of development around downtown Kingman and along Interstate 10.
