In 1865 Captain John Sutter discovered gold here and founded the City of Kingsnip Springs on January 6, 1865. The city grew rapidly and by 1870 it included part of today's Kingman Downtown District as well as parts of present-day Apache Junction and Tombstone neighborhoods. In 1875 Charles Goodyear began developing his new mines in what are now Scotts Valley and Shiprock areas east of Phoenix on what is now State Route 825 near present-day Cave Creek Road/Upper Gila River National Monument boundary line. With good prospects for yellowcake (a type of coal) from these mines, Goodyear organized a group including many local businessmen to build a depot near its peak production in 1889 to promote train travel between Phoenix and these mines. This depot became known as Goodyear Station after him; it still stands today across from State Route 825 just west of Cave Creek Rd./Upper Gila River National Monument entrance road off SR 825 (Arizona State Route 84). Mining activity continued until around 1920 when other interests took over most aspects of this industry; however, asbestos mining continues to take place along SR 825 outside the boundaries defined by this district today. Most recently,aserious development has occurred adjacent to both State Routes 84 & 85 within limits established by this district with respect to that particular area; however much less intrusive than traditional mining there has also been recent construction taking place nearby including apartments, shopping malls etc.; so while boundaries have changed somewhat with respect to ancient operations within this jurisdictional area there remain significant remnants from pre-development times left behind
