The history of Kingman, Arizona begins with the discovery of silver in 1859. The town was founded by James W. King and his son John King in what is now Mohave County. By 1870, the population had grown to 2,000 and gold had been found at various sites around the area. The town prospered until a series of natural disasters struck in 1876-1877 which destroyed much of the infrastructure and left the town with little choice but to abandon its golden days. In 1886, Brigham Young dedicated a large piece of land in central Kingman to become an agricultural center for the Navajo Nation. In 1929, Katella Drive was renamed after Mrs. Florence Ballard who donated $10,000 for development of the city center adjacent to her ranching property. Kingman experienced another boom during World War II when thousands of soldiers from all overthe United States came through town looking for work or entertainment opportunities. During this time, many businesses were built including a movie theater and restaurant called The Gentlemen’s Club which still stands today! A few days later he rode into town from Apache Spring Creek on horseback and delivered another stirring speech before large crowds at First National Bank Building: "I have come here today [...] because I want you all to know what kind of man I am—a man who loves you all very much". One writer observed that Grant's visit "marked a turning point" in Kingman's history; it did not only inaugurate more aggressive Indian policy but also attract white businessmen interested in developing Along Valley roadsides instead of mining them.[1] The late 1800s saw growth in both Kingman and Phoenix due largely to goldmining operations conducted by Northern California entrepreneurs such as James Gifford or Donner brothers; these men brought new life to areas long abandoned by miners because they found high-quality gold deposits without having to deal with Native American tribes who often objected to development near their traditional lands. This lacklustre population growth is especially curious given fact that entire Gold District east side was already home numerous farming/mining families prioritizing accessible land& good water resources over highly traveled main streetscities like Phoenix or Tucson which had exploded rapidly post-Gold Rush era owing mostlyto lure of huge wages offered by those same companies [3],[4],[5],[6] .
