The name of the town is derived from Kingman Jack, an early settler and rancher who developed land in what is now Kingman. They started a ranch that included some of the earliest irrigated agriculture in this area. By 1890, they had built a large frame house on the site of present-day Kingman High School which served as their home until 1957 when they moved to their current home on Mount Hope Road. A post office called Kingman was established in 1887, and remained in operation until 1959. The community took its name from George A. Kingman, one of the original developers of Pinal County and one of its most influential citizens. Mr. Kingman came to Phoenix with his family during the Gold Rush period and soon began developing land hereabouts including much of what is now downtown Phoenix (then known as Jackson Heights). He purchased 640 acres east of downtown for $10 per acre ($ long ago it would have been much more) and named it "Kingman." It wasn't until 1909 that he offered naming rights to what would become today's high school football stadium - KHS (later renamed Arizona State University). He also donated land for a city park which includes present day Kaiser Hospital/Arizona Care Home

However, Kingman regained some of its former prominence following the opening of Interstate 10 in 1991. John Kingman was born on September 15th, 1868 in what is now Glendale Heights, Illinois to parents Elijah and Sarah (née Wright). He started working on his father's farm at age six before moving with his family to Prescott in 1882. In 1885 he married Anna Wetzel and they moved to Phoenixville where they raised their four children: John Jr., Anna (referred to here as "Annie"), Frederick (later Frederick W.), and Elmer Wendell. In 1903 John Sr.'s death left Annie with five young children and she entered into a legal battle with her father's estate over control of their educational funds- an issue that would continue through much of her life. Despite being represented by two attorneys throughout most of the case, Annie was eventually successful in acquiring control over her sons' education funds which she used to support them through college tuition and books alone until their deaths at age 66 and 68 respectively in 1966 and 1978 respectively. Anna Kingman continued livingin Phoenixville until her death there on October 7th 1914 after a long illness brought about by multiple sclerosis; she had been suffering from this condition since childhood It marked the first time that any Uptown property had been sold within Phoenixville limits since Queen Creek Township was organized on November 3rd 1875 Thereafter Annie Kingsmen resided principally at Uptown until her death Thereon January 5th 1941 Mrs Kingsmen having passed away interred adjacent thereto With full knowledge & consent Of all future descendants thereof who may hereafter reside therein A daughter Of Mrs Kingsmen By name Dorothy Ewing widow Of Mr Ewing deceased This disposition Was approved At A Meeting Held On That Date By The Board Of Trustees Of Queen Creek Township To Which Mrs Kingsmen Asseemed To Have timely Appeared And United In Opposition To All Others Present ------- After completing high school in Phoenixville he enrolled at Southern California University where he earned his degree in agriculture upon graduation in 1902 He then relocated back east where he worked as an inspector for several years before starting his own farm near Sun City Station, AZ located about twenty miles north of Prescott on I-10 just west of mile post 104 junction
