They founded Mesa Verde soon after arriving and began building what would become Kingman on land they acquired from the Apache Indians. In 1915, Kingman became one of several towns incorporated within Pinal County by voters via referendum request following the enactment of state legislation authorizing county government by petition rather than election alone as had been the custom for most counties inArizona at that time . In 1920, local merchants formed a cooperative to improve transportation and marketing within their community with resultant growth into what is now known as downtown Kingman which then included much of today's business district including portions of Townsquare mall and several other shopping centers as well as numerous homespun businesses that continue to thrive today despite challenges associated with economic recession throughout much of America during those years .... Valley View Elementary School opened its doors to students on October 8th 1928 ...... By 1951 Kingsmen had dwindled down so low they stopped electing school officials; Public Schools were established only because there was no other place for children to go...... After two terms each by Mayor Harry Waddell (1951-1957) and City Councilor Clyde Sinking (1957-1959), citizens voted not to reincorporate into Pinal County again until November 3rd 1959 when a duly elected three member Board met at which time it unanimously agreed by resolution that Kingdom should be annexed back into Pinal County ........ On November 3rd 1959 residents voted overwhelmingly back into incorporation again when a duly elected three member Board met at which time it unanimously agreed by resolution that Kingdom should be annexed back into Pinal County ........ Many people have commented upon how annexation has not happened exactly as planned or even remotely; however annexation has always been possible given voter demand......... Today's downtown broad daylight commercial district located just east of I-10/US 60 between Camelback Mountain Rd./State Road 143 & First St., contains many historical buildings dating back to 1911 including Valley View Elementary School....... Other nearby shopping centers include Scottsdale Fashion Center southwest corner First Street & Saguaro Ave., Peoria Fashion Center northwest corner State Road 153 & Glendale Blvd., Tempe Fashion Mall east side McDowell Rd./State Route 85
