Goodyear, Arizona is a city in the Phoenix metropolitan area, located on the banks of the Mohave River. It was founded in 1912 as Goodyear Air Force Base. The base was moved to its present location in 1956 and became a municipally-owned airport. Goodyear authorized annexation of Surprise Valley by Phoenix in 1959, and that year renamed itself Goodyear City. In 1966, Goodyear City annexed nearby Glendale Heights and named it after the company's founder, Charles Goodyear. Finally, in 1978, all of Surprise Valley were annexed into Goodyear City proper. Goodyear is one of the most Tornado-prone cities in America; over seventy percent of all tornado touchdowns are reported here. The city has also been struck by several earthquakes; both major ones that killed more people than any other place in AZ during those years (1912-1975). Most recently though was an EF5 tornado that touched down on October 15th 2010 causing extensive damage across much of downtown including many highrise buildings which remain standing today despite being completely demolished by this super tornado!

In 1990, Goodyear became one of several U.S cities to sign an agreement pledging $1 billion in cleanup costs associated with Superfund sites within its borders.
