Goodyear is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 54,752 at the 2010 census. Goodyear is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is the second most populous city in Arizona after Phoenix and 9th most populous city in the US. The first residents of Goodyear were Spanish colonists who arrived in what is now Pima County in 1823 as part of an effort to explore new land beyond San Francisco Bay. They named their village Santa Cruz de la Grita (Stoney Creek). Eventually, they founded a town on the south bank of Grita River near present-day Goodyear, which became known as Goodyear because of its good location for trading goods with other parts of Mexico and Central America. In 1867, when Territorial Governor George Humphreys approved creation of a county within Pima County to serve all Arizonans by splitting it off from Apache County due to lack of settlers willing or able to enter into Mexican land grants (the area now includes much of downtown Phoenix), Goodyear was one of several towns designated for annexation into the new county. In 1870, construction began on what would become GoodYear’s first courthouse and jail; it opened on December 12, 1870. The growth and development of Good Year followed typical rural Arizona patterns until World War II when industry took over and employment soared thanks to airmail service created by US Airways (later Delta Air Lines). At war's end, many companies left Tucson for California; but Aviation pioneers such as Charles Lindbergh brought millions more people—and jobs—to town during those postwar years than could have been imagined 5 decades earlier when only smugglers operated out thereabouts!
