By 1890, Goodyear had over 100 businesses including banks, insurance companies, grocery stores, horses shoeing plants and other services that brought jobs to thousands of people. The Panic of 1893 caused many business failures until Richard age 10 started working at his father's General Store as an errand boy for $1 per week (still among the lowest wages then).Richard became supervisory clerk at 16 years old when he replaced his older brother Harry who had been laid off from work because of bad economic conditions in Goodyear during that time period. When Richard's uncle died suddenly leaving him money to start a small hardware store next door (Hank Hardware), Richard took over operations at 18 years old which continued until 1916 when family responsibilities forced him into retirement due to poor health; however he never lost interest in running Hank Hardware again once he got back into good health! Goodyear experienced its heyday during World War II when it was home to more than 20 military installations including three Air Force stations: Luke Air Force Base (now Wright-Patterson Air National Guard Base), Green Forest Army Depot and White Sands Missile Range. Postwar growth slowed as most civilians returned home but recommenced following World War III with new industrial developments such as aircraft manufacturing plants Boeing Aircraft Company (later Lockheed Martin) and McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation (later McDonnell Douglas Co.). These expansions led to increased traffic congestion on I-10 through downtown Goodyears west side where Interstate 10 crossed over railroad tracks midway between downtowns since limited space existed for expanding highways east of town limits onto agricultural land beyond what could be developed without damaging or destroying homes or businesses along I-10 Traffic flows have since significantly improved thanks largely tooriented expressways like I-10/8th Street & US 90/Moses Lake Rd., currently under construction
