Goodyear has been inhabited by Native Americans since before European settlement began. The first Anglo-American settlers arrived in 1869 and named the community Goodyear after James Goodyear, an American president and member of the Gold Rush era wagon train that discovered gold near Queen Creek. In 1915, Goodyear became one of the original U.S. cities when it was incorporated as a city by an act of Congress. It grew rapidly during World War II as a munitions manufacturing center for the war effort; its residents produced more than 1 million rounds of ammunition alone during the war. After hostilities ended, Goodyear experienced rapid growth as a cultural andProsperity City; its downtown become one of Phoenix' most popular tourist destinations. Goodyear is a city in Yuma County, Arizona, United States. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The name "Goodyear" comes from Andrew Goodyear and his brothers John and George Goodyear. Situated on 110 acres (42 hectares) of rolling hills above Phoenix proper, Goodyear had been mentioned as a possibility for the new town site by J. P. Morgan in 1881. In 1906, Goodyear became one of the first cities to be established in Arizona when it was annexed by Phoenix from Maricopa County. The city's history can be traced back to 1881 when Andrew Goodyear and his brothers John and George GoodYear bought land parcels east of downtown Phoenix for $2 per acre ($40 per km²). By 1907, good year had become an incorporated municipality with a population of 10 residents (1 mayor and 9 councilmen). In 1912, the city's first fire department was organized under Captain Harry Harkins with help from philanthropist Ignatius Donnelly Jr.. In 1916-17 City Councilwoman Emma Smith served as acting Fire Chief while her husband Chas Sitton served as Fire Marshal until he retired in 1917 due to ill health; later that year City Councilman Harry Harkins took over leadership duties on an interim basis until Smith could assume full responsibility on January 1st 1917 which she did until 1924 when she left office to marry Mayor James Laughlin Sr.. On July 16th 1923 Goodyear experienced its worst tornado outbreak ever with 3 homes destroyed within minutes including Mrs Ayer’s home which stood just outside of town limits but still suffered heavy damage due to winds speeds up to 175 mph (290 km/h). On October 15th 1923 there was another major tornado outbreak which caused severe damage throughout downtownPhoenix shortly after midnight; this time however only 2 homes were destroyed with no injuries reported although some windows were smashed in what is considered one of Phoenix’s earliest tornados! As early as 1926 good year had started planning for what would become today’s central business district comprising most all downtown functions plus many outlying neighborhoods including Grapevine Estates northwest of town center along I-10 motorway corridor; this plan included construction & funding for addition of a second garage & associated streetscape changes & reclamation project costing approximately $135 million dollars completed by late 1950s via publicprivate partnership! In 1951 Dr Jens Weidemann became City Manager effective May 1st following resignation or impeachment proceedings against him related thereto by then Mayor Don Imus effective February 14th following recall petition filed by citizens alleging malfeasance during previous 4 years periods as well as numerous other charges brought against him thru special prosecutor investigation launched subsequent thereto!!During much OF my tenure there have been several projects initiated or funded through our fund known affectionately locally as “Dr Weidemann’s Bucket Brigade”namely: water main replacement program(3), streetlight conversion program(4), widening alleyways(2), resurfacing roadways(1), etc.; total cost now totals almost $200 million dollars !!!!! With its heavily populated central business district located adjacent Interstate 10 Motorway corridor and extensive annexation into neighboring municipalities since 1913 it has always been faced with various challenges – some more pressing than others! One such challenge that has repeatedly come into question throughout its long history has been how will Good Year handle growth potential resulting from increased traffic congestion on I-10? For many years Now concerns about Traffic Congestion on I-10 have kept GOODYEAR residents current both during meetings held throughout the monthlong process precedingapproved Measure M development proposals submitted each fall Meanwhile investment decisions regarding expanding I-10 Exit 5A remain unmade despite multiple requests from elected officials representing GOODYEAR constituents ABOUT THIS PROBLEM!!!!
