Goodyear is a city in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. The population was 58,711 at the 2010 census. It is the third-smallest city in Arizona. Goodyear was founded in 1892 as a small mining town on the Mohave Plateau by General Mining and Manufacturing Company officers John Goodyear and Wm Hovey. The two men named it after their home town of Goodyear, England. Goodyear became an important transportation hub for goods moving through the Mojave Desert during the 19th century; it was also known for its musical instruments, including guitars and mandolins made from good year iron and steel plates. In 1912 Goodyear opened its first commercial store - then called "The Old Store" - on East First Street near Grand Avenue. At that time it was one of only a few places in Phoenix that sold ice cream cones and other types of refreshments from trucks or street carts. During World War II Goodyear played host to many military airfields; among them were Luke Air Force Base (later Wright-Patterson AFB), which operated until 1943, and nearby Yuma Army Air Field (later Yuma Proving Ground). These facilities helped contribute to Good Year's nickname "City of Flight." In 1970 GoodYear annexed neighbouring Paulding County to form what is now known as Phoenix metropolitan area
