Famed explorer George Custer and his Seventh Cavalry fought an action near Goodyear on October 6, 1876 during the Battle of Apache Pass; after losing many men, Custer retreated back up the Santa Fe Trail to Fort Hoyle in Goodsville eight days later. In 1912 Goodyear became one of thirteen cities in Arizona organized as part of the new state of Arizona. The city's economy depended largely upon agricultural production until World War II when it shifted to manufacturing and other services once the war ended. In recent years Goodyear has made strides in becoming an entertainment and tourist destination with attractions such as its annual rodeo event which attracts more than 100,000 spectators annually; tourism has also been bolstered by developments such as a new convention center and arena which opened in 2001 and various professional sports teams who have played their home games there over the years including the Phoenix Suns (now Suns),Arizona Cardinals (now Cardinals),Phoenix Mavericks (now Mavericks)and Phoenix Coyotes ().
