Glendale, Arizona is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 54,813 at the 2010 census. Glendale is home to the University of Phoenix and many high-tech companies. It has been historically an agricultural center with dairy farms and citrus orchards being the most notable businesses. In 1885, Major George Armstrong Custer sold land to John Tatum in what would become Glendale. Tatum built his ranch on the site in 1887 and named it after his father General James Tatum. In 1906, owner Harry Kapp developed what would become Kapp's Park on the east side of town between First Avenue and Mohave Street. The park was dedicated to Lieutenant Colonel Charles Wignall who had fought at Apache Pass during the Mexican-American War before becoming a U.S. Marshal in 1886 as part of territorial government control over Tucson area following its annexation by Arizona Territory from Mexico that year.
