In that year, the company changed its name again to The sweetshop Company & Technical Research Laboratories. During that time period, the company developed many innovative products such as stereoscopic film equipment and photographic enlargers. In 1958, Harry Sweetman passed away and his son-in-law David Sanger took over management of the company. Over time, Sanger developed a strong interest in optical technology and started developing new products based on that interest. He also began working closely with researchers at University of Arizona's Physics Department who were attempting to develop a method for producing high quality images from photography negatives. Eventually this project became known as Image Manipulation Techniques (IMT). The first people to live in what is now Glendale were the Hohokam Native American tribe who settled there in the late eighteenth century. In 1853, Apache warrior Gabriel García Márquez fought and killed an American military officer during a skirmish near Glendale after being released from prison on parole. After García Márquez's death in 1927, his estate donated land to the town. In 1912, Hollywood star Cecil B DeMille built a private airstrip next to Glendale Municipal Airport for his airplane production company which he called "DeMille Aircraft". The airport served as an important focal point for movie productions until it closed in 1954 due to budget cuts by then-Mayor Pat McDonough. In 1955–1956, Dwight Eisenhower campaigned unsuccessfully for president on the promise of creating jobs in California through development of Interstate 10 and other projects; instead he was elected President with support from within Hollywood industry circles who saw him as a potential check on government nationalization of industries. In 1957–1958 Glendale became one of six cities chosen as sites for what would become known as Eastern Time Zone (EST).
