Pistolero José Antonio Ibarra used a shotgun as his main armament and fired from an old canoa filled with water to hit targets on the city walls. In 1851, Major General Stephen Kearny ordered the construction of Fort McDowell near present day Phoenixville Heights in order to protectGlendale from Apache raiders. The fort was completed in 1853 and became known as Kearny's Station. This period of time is known as the "Old Gold Rush" because of the large number of gold discoveries that took place during this time around Tucson, Arizona and Prescott, Arizona

Known as the Stephenson Rifle, this new weapon featured an improved breechloader design that allowed it to fire multiple rounds per minute instead of just one. It became possible for farmers and other outdoor folk to take advantage of this new technology in order to hunt game at ranges up to more than 100 yards away!

In 1897, John Wrenn donated land that included present day Glendale Boulevard and Mesa Road totaling 362 feet (111 m) above mean sea level along what would later become Avalon Drive; this donation was considered one of the largest philanthropies ever given in Phoenix history. In 1902 developer Harry Chandler bought 8 acres (3 ha) east of Camelback Mountain from his brother-in-law Emmett Wright for $5 per acre ($100 total). He named it West Covina after his favorite horse farm located about 5 miles (8 km) east of Los Angeles proper on Long Valley Road near Pasadena Hills Village Resort Park; West Covina was also home to some of Chandler's earliest businesses such as a grocery store and gas station that opened in 1907 on Catalina Avenue between Seventh and Eighth Streets (). By 1912 most Arizonans knew about Hollywood because three weeks earlier 20th Century Fox Pictures had opened its studios at 1601 Vine Street just south of downtownPhoenix making it possible for people who lived outsidePhoenix or within24 hours' driveof Phoenixto come see their movie stars up close (). In 1916 Harry Chandler sold Mesa Road east of Camelback Mountain back to Emmett Wright for $6 per acre ($150 total). This property would be renamed "Mesa" after him in 1932 when he donated it back to Wright following his death.. A new airfield called Globe Field was built northeast of downtown by Air Service Company pilots during World War I as needed due to lack of available airfields southwest of downtown (). After World War I Globe Field served as a training ground for American Expeditionary Forces before becoming a military base during World War II with veteran's housing (), mess halls (), stores (), army barracks ()and navy yards (). On July 15, 1944 Japanese forces attacked Clark Air Force Base resulting in more than 100 U .S., British, Australian and New Zealand soldiers being killed (); two days later all U .S.'s bases were closed worldwide due to Japanese aggression (). As part Socktow Airfield () came online on November 1st 1945 aerial refueling operations began supportING Operation Overlord landing troops at Normandy beachhead ()) thus ending combat operations over Europe ). The last Aircraft Carrier USS Enterprise departed NAS Cherry Point ("Endergate" - Decommissioned Apr 14 1948), her last mission being delivering coal from Charleston harbor() Aug 2 1946 en route from Philadelphia Naval Shipyard(). Atglendale Municipal Airport became operational Apr 17 1947.) With all wars ending no aircraft carriers remained moored there so she decommissioned Jan 19 1954.) Nowadays only open weekends during summer months when weather permits8000 ft runway .)

The district operated schools from pre-Kindergarten through high school. On July 1, 2009 the district merged with the Phoenix Union High School District to form the Phoenix Union School District.
