Glendale, Arizona is a city in southern Arizona. The population was 86,491 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Glendale County. The land that makes up Glendale was first settled by Pima and Tohono O'odham people in the early 18th century. A small town called Prescott was founded on the site in 1868, and growth continued until post-World War II when suburban sprawl began to take hold in Glendale and other areas of Southern Arizona. On April 6, 1912, Mayor George Wickersham proposed a resolution naming Glendale after then-Governor William H. Taft due to its resemblance to Wheatland Creek in Kansas City, Missouri which had been named for General James K. Polk's father-in-law Winfield Scott Hancock. This proposal passed with only one vote against it from Mayor Wickersham's fellow Democrats despite objections from some local business leaders who felt that giving away city property would create an unfair competitive advantage for their opponents. Today, civic pride still motivates many residents to support efforts to rename or commemorate important peach orchards or squares located within walking distance of their homes as part of city commemoration programs such as "Heritage Days." In 1978, following passage of Proposition 209 which repealed most anti-discrimination laws statewide (the nations first affirmative action legislation), Glendale started honoring Hispanics through ethnic festivals and community events instead of using government resources specifically for this purpose; this eventually led to the formation of Hispanic Chamber Of Commerce And Businesses (HCCB) in 2001). At present there are over 100 Hispanic organizations operating out of Glendale proper with more than 2 million members nationwide! In recent years there has also been increasing interest among residents in restoring aspects of downtownGlendale including installing new sidewalks and lights at night as well as restoration work on ghost buildings dating back to the 1920s which have remained largely unaltered since then!
