In 1925, businessman Harry Chandler founded Chandler's liquor store on First Street near Front Street which soon became one of the most successful liquor stores in America due to its innovative marketing techniques such as "mixing" wines from different countries into single bottles so that customers could enjoy them without having to order multiple bottles each time. In 1935 he built what is now known as Ridgemont Drive which ran parallel alongglen between I-10 and Camelback Road before turning north towards McDowell Road where it intersects Glendale Boulevard today. In 1943 American Airlines made their first commercial flight from Phoenix–Mesa Airport when Douglas Aircraft Corporation delivered two Boeing Stearman aircraft carrying military passengers from Los Angeles International Airport to Phoenix Municipal Airport (now renamed ASU Moanee).
