In 1893, Glendale became part of what is now Pima County when it was organized from portions ofMaricopa County along with Tempe and Apache Junction.. Prior to this time much of what is now Glendale came from parts south or east of Prescott where ranching activity took place for subsistence purposes only without any strategic significance beyond that particular locality at that time... The first residents were some 60 pioneer farmers who arrived between October 1888 and December 1889 through passage down the Colorado River on two steamboats Superior built by Swenzel & Company with equipment provided by John Wesley Powell...
