Gilbert, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The town was founded on October 24, 1887 by the Haskell and Worth families. Gilbert became an incorporated city in 1951. On January 1, 1984, Gilbert was merged into the larger city of Phoenix. The first scopes in Gilbert were built by John Wade and his son Julius Wade in 1892. The first scope designed specifically for hunting was built by Captain George Cobbler in 1903. In 1912, Captain Irving Morse donated a 10-inch (25 cm) main power telescope to the University of Arizona at Tucson as a research instrument. In 1917, Drs. George Maunder and Cyrus McCormick donation of 8-inch (20 cm) refractor telescope to the University of Arizona at Tucson made it possible for astronomers to look deep into space using that size aperture telescope. By 1928, all primary telescopes having an aperture less than 20 centimeters had been erected around the world including those at Mount Wilson Observatory and Mt Fuji National Park Observatory in Japan. In 1951 Gilbert became an incorporated city under the name "Gilbert". On January 1st 1984 our beautiful city absorbed neighboring Phoenix which had grown rapidly since 1951 with much modernization taking place within that time including: completion of Interstate 15; General Motors Plant eastside development; Phoenician Building expansion providing office space for many businesses; additions such as Our Lady Of Guadalupe Chapel which now houses City Hall; Sawmill Creek Dam addition completed creating a new parkland area adjacent to downtown; numerous renovations/updates including complete gutting of old City Hall building providing new 500+ sq ft (40 m2) flooring inside while retaining most original historic items); construction of brand new library wing completed just north across First Street from City Hall making this one of only 2 cities nationwide with its own dedicated library!
