It is located on the western edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is part of the Tucson-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gilbert was founded by Latinos working in the silver mines near present day Jerome in 1881. Gilbert has been inhabited since prehistory, with evidence of human presence dating back to 10,000 BC. The first Spanish settlements were established in what is now Gilbert during the 16th century as part of Alta California under Governor Antonio López de Salinas. The mining industry played an important role in early Gilbert history and by 1900 there were over fifty mines operating in Gilbert. Thesilvermining boom that followed from 1907 to 1912 led to increased population growth and development throughout downtown Gilbert and other parts of town. In 1914Gilbert became one of sixteen communities incorporated within Pinal County when it was created from portions of Apache County and Maricopa County. At this time most towns were organized into twenty-six districts which functioned as local governing bodies for their respective areas In 1951 Gilbert became an independent city when it voters approved annexation by Tucson for a total population of over 25,000 people During World War II many businesses closed down due to lack of war production; however, some reopened after 1945 because uranium mining began nearby In 1957 Gilbert became home to Pima Community College when Valley State Teachers College (later Tucson State University) moved from its original location just north of town
