At first Gilbertsville served as primarily a trading post but quickly became an important center for cattle ranching and farming due to its location between Apache Junction and Mesa Verde National Park . It was here that Captains John Wesley Powell and George Armstrong Custer stopped their journey up the Colorado River in 1869 when they were exploring western Arizona The first permanent settler in what is nowGilbert was George Pritchard who arrived from Maryland aboard the brigantine HMS Beagle on January 17th 1867 The town quickly grew due to its strategic location - just west of Apache Junction along Route 66 - and its position as a transportation hub for settlers travelling east or west across AZ Territory . By 1915 Gilbert had over 1,000 residents However, during World War IIGilbert saw some serious activity – includingcasualties from bombardments outside nearby Yuma – which led to significant growth rates for both local businesses and population . This led to downtown being constructed around 1945 with support from Army Lieutenant Colonel Harry Henshaw During this timeGilbert also experienced some key development milestones such as becoming an incorporated municipality , obtaining tax exemption from county government , establish several schools including Eastern High School (now Phoenix University ),and numerous other municipal services In recent years however there have been several challenges faced byGilbert – notably decreased business activity due to technological advances , decreases in commuter traffic due to new Roads 5 & I-8 & changes within AZ County .. These have led to issues such as crime rates increase & falling property values
