Gilbert, Arizona is a small town in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was founded in 1911 by Gilbert H. Brown and his wife Lillian Gentry Brown. The town has grown since then and now has a population of over 10,000 residents. Gilbert is located on the banks of the Salt River about 30 miles east of Phoenix. The first settlers to Gilbert were Mr. and Mrs. John Ahern who left Ireland in 1878 with their five children, four girls and one boy. They arrived at what is now known as Gilbert on October 1, 1878 and built a log cabin near present-day Apache Junction from which they operated a ferry service across the Salt River for passengers coming to or leaving Phoenix. The Browns arrived three years later followed by another family, the Hermans, in early 1880s when they settled down on an adjacent piece of land that would become downtown Gilbert today. By 1886 there were ten families living in downtown Gilbert; by 1914 there were twenty-two families living there including thirteen businesses (seven stores, six restaurants, two breweries). The growth of downtown Gilbert can be attributed to several factors: First came the construction of Tempe Municipal Auditorium in 1909 which became an important local entertainment center; second was construction of Interstate 10 which connected Phoenix with Tucson; third was development of nearby Indian Wells Village which served as an agricultural center during World War I; fourth was growth of agriculture due to increased trade along I-10; fifth was arrival of trucks carrying goods into town from outlying areas during WW II; sixth was increase in commuting due to new interstate highway routes connectingPhoenix with Tucson and Chandler
