In 1916 the Stephensons donated land to the Pima County School District for a new school and park which became known as "Gilbert Park". The town began to grow rapidly with families moving into the area from nearby Phoenix and Tucson. By 1919 the population had reached 2,000 people and by 1923 it reached 5,000 people! In 1925 the town incorporated as a city! Today there are over 12,000 residents living within its boundaries! Migration continued to Gilbert during World War II with many soldiers stationed here while their units were assembled or deployed elsewhere; however, no large waves of immigration occurred during this time period due to lack of available housing or other reasons
