Gilbert, Arizona is a small town in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 8,571 at the 2000 census. Gilbert has been inhabited since the mid-19th century. Gilbert is located on the eastern edge of Tucson and is bordered by Apache Junction to the south and east, Nacooche to the north, and Pinal County to the west. According to 2010 census data, Gilbert's unemployment rate is 5%. The area now known as Gilbert was first populated by Hohokam Indians in the late 18th century. In 1867, Don Carlos Castilla founded a rancho called Rancho San Pedro de la Frontera about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of present-day Gilbert on a tract of land granted to him by Mexico for his service in suppressing Mexican resistance during the Mexican War of Independence. The Rancho San Pedro de la Frontera became part of what would become Pima County when it was organized in 1912. During World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered American soldiers stationed in Tucson to build an airbase at Tanque Verde within easy reach of European allies who were fighting in Europe; this led to development of nearby Chandler and Mesa Verde airports which were instrumental in supporting America's war effort during World War II. In 1951, Pima County was created from portions of Cochise and Gila counties following statehood recommendations made by then-Governor Neil Goldwater as part of his efforts to reduce county government size after passage of Proposition 22 which reduced voting rights for citizens who lived outside city limits. As such, much smaller towns like Gilbert were left without representation on county councils or even on local school boards until later years when more populous communities began popping up throughout northwestern Phoenix and southern Tempe areas making rural areas less attractive for residents>.
