Gilbert, Arizona is a small town in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was founded in 1912 by Gilbert K. Mason and his family as a farming community on the east side of the Salt River. The community grew rapidly during World War II as vegetables were grown for war rationing and munitions production. After the war, Gilbert became an agricultural center with a large population of Hispanic and African American farmers who engaged in raising livestock, growing crops, and manufacturing goods. In 1970, Gilbert incorporated as a municipality and today it has a population of around 2,000 people. The first settler in Gilbert was George Armstrong Mackenzie who arrived in 1887 from Canada. He built the first house on what is now Main Street. Mackenzie was one of the original incorporators of Gilbert and served as mayor from 1911 to 1914 and 1917 to 1919. Other early settlers included Edwin Fenton (1888-1962), Harry Clements (1889-1968), John Dickson (1892-1957), Wm Averill (1893-1971), James Hildebrandt (1900-1981), Frank Ellington (1904-1980) along with many others who would play significant roles in itsdevelopment over time including ranchers Walter Shandliff (1912-1994) and Bill Shandliff (1920-. ). In 1912 Gilbert Kavanagh Mason set out to found what would become America's second city after Denver, Colorado Springs – an endeavor that ultimately failed due to lack of financial support (). However, despite this setback, Mason kept up his namesake's dream of creating an artificial city located along the Salt River where he could raise crops while hosting lectures given byminent figures such as Woodrow Wilson (). By 1920 there were over 100 residents living in Gilbertsville but business activity had stalled due to competition from neighboring towns such as Phoenix). However, when plans for downtown development were revived in 1930s by Mayor Harry Clements (), Gilmore blossomed into one of Phoenix's most vibrant towns with dozens of businesses directly housed within its walls (). Today Gilmore remains one Of The Most Active Cities In Arizona For Business And Homeownership
