The history of Gilbert begins with one man –Gilbert himself- who set out to create a town in this remote location just north of Phoenix on October 25th, 1907 pursuant to an offer he received from Jerald Halsey for land that would form part of what would become known as Camelback Ranch (later renamed Apache Junction). At first it was only Gilbert who lived there: his wife Anna Maria (née Madsen)chamberlain; their two children; their parents; five siblings; three Nephews or nieces living at home (Emmalynne Chamberlain Halsey Wells, Caroline Wells Chamberlain Smith & Clifford Chamberlain); five grandsons or great nephews all living at home (George Atherton Sellers Gilchrist Sellers & Damon Sells Sellers Jr., John Charles Gilchrist Sellers III & Katherine Shafer Sellers). There were also four boarders or guests: Mrs Clements’ brother-in-law Leman Warshaw Marshall; Dr Tom Whitehead from Mesa Verde Hotel; General John Pershing’s adjutant general [of American Expeditionary Forces] Lt Col James Fenton Woodruff]. These initial settlers soon numbered more than 100 souls when they erected cabins near present day First Street/Route 66 junction on Valentine’s Valley Road east of downtown Tucson while continuing their construction work around Fort McDowell Park east of downtown where they also built a water tower (the current water tower used for municipal purposes). They accessed Star Lake through an opening in Valentine’s Valley Road just south of today’s Post Office building lot while others took advantage of trails running parallel to route 66 leading westward off Springdale Rd . For transportation they relied heavily upon horse drawn wagons drawn by cowboys named Tom Whitehead driving them down “Valentine Valley Rd . into Tucson Springs about 12 miles distant thence across country 2 1/2 miles further upvalley on Avenue Q about 4 miles long then back interior route about 8 miles away from Post Office .
