Gilbert, Arizona is a town located in Pima County, Arizona. It was founded in 1912 as the town of Gilbert on the site of an earlier settlement, Gilbert Station. The name was changed to Gilbert in 1916 after the death of its original namesake, General George Gilbert. When Pima County was created in 1912, it included all of what is now Pima and Maricopa counties. The first post office opened in Gilbert on January 15, 1913. The population of the town peaked at 905 in 1920 but declined to 597 by 1930 due to the onset of World War II. After the war, Gilbert experienced a revival with growth from the construction industry and new housing developments. Growth slowed during the 1970s as a result of recessionary times and increased competition from other towns within Pima County for jobs and development funding. In 2007, Gilbert became one of several towns within Pima County that elected to become unincorporated areas effective February 1st 2007 under Proposition 107 which granted these municipalities greater autonomy and control over their own affairs without having to comply with county rules and regulations. By 2013, however, growth had resumed with new development projects announced for both Gilbertson Dam Park outside town limits along Interstate 10 (the old main drag) as well as renovated or newly constructed buildings acrossfrom downtown including a library/shopping center/. As part of this trend%, growth has also been seen in neighboring towns such as Tuba City which have seen significant population increases since 2000 whileGilbert has stagnated or even decreased (see attached map).
