Gilbert is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 511 at the 2010 census. Gilbert is named for George Gilbert, an American merchant who settled there in 1885. The community developed around the Post Office and several churches which were built during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Gilbert is located about northeast of Phoenix on State Route 89A. The post office was first established in Gilbert on July 14, 1886, by Wm. Fenton and Chas. Higginson from Prescott Valley.[1] It served as the county seat from 1889 until 1912 when Phoenix became the county seat again. In 1926, Gilbert merged with nearby Coolidge to form a new municipality which retained its name until it was renamed Gilbert in 1959.[2] The original Post Office building still stands and serves as a museum today (see below). In 1925, baseball player Roy Campanella played his first game for the newly formed Mesa City Stars of the Western League here before joining the New York Yankees two years later; he would play nine more seasons with them before retiring at age 37 in 1951[3][4]. Campanella's nephew Joe also played baseball here briefly while attending collegebefore becoming an assistant coach at Arizona State University after graduating from college in 1922[5][6]. Other well-known residents include actor Steve McQueen (of Monty Python fame) who lived near Campus Martius Road between 1950-1951,[7] singer Loretta Lynn (born Loretta Lynn Parkhurst), comedian Phil Silvers (billed as "Phil Silvers at Home", December 15, 1949-January 2, 1990)[8], dentist Drs. Robert Siegel and Milton Blumenthal (dentist/orthodontist since 1966)[9], broadcaster Don Ward ( anchors morning news show KHON 2 & 10(K)),[10][11], author Toni Morrison,[12][13],[14] and rancher Bob Moffitt (founder of Bob Moffitt Farms).[15] Today most of what once made up this small town has been replaced by suburban housing developments due to increasing commuting into Phoenix or other large metropolitan areas outside of Gilbert Regional Airport; however some older buildings such as one historical post office remain standing that serve as a museum open tothe public every Saturday 9am – 4pm[16]. One local business which remains active is True Value Hardware store which opened its doors in 1906 next door to First National Bank; True Value closed its doors entirely less than two years ago after operating for over 200 years
