Fountain Hills is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,683 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Fountain Hills rests on the eastern edge of the Mohave Desert and covers an area of . According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Fountain Hills has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps. The town began as a mining community in 1877 and grew rapidly after General Tom Atchison opened up Chiricahua National Forest east of Fountain Hills in 1881. By 1904, there were 1,000 people living here; by 1910 it had reached 2,500. The post office was established in 1907 and functioned until 1912 when it merged with nearby Apache Junction. In 1915–16 construction started on what would become known as Atchison Road (later State Route 66). Today’s Fountain Hills was laid out as a planned community by developer Harry Weldon during Prohibition years when lead standards were high due to the abundance of silver found in the area. The first homes were built between 1919 and 1925; most were single-family residences with attached garages for fruit orchardists who drove theirloads into town for market gardening before picking up their produce at local stores near Interstate 10 outside of town. In 1951 Mayor George Schmitz formed an all-Republican city government which soon became more leftist after Ulysses S. Grant appointed him mayor to head up downtown Phoenix's Progressive wing following his election as President in November that year despite being party hostile towards Lincoln Republicans inside Phoenix proper during those years... In 1959 City Councilman Ray Steele successfully ran against incumbent Schmitz for mayoralty [and] became first openly gay person ever elected public official from Arizona... As one result of these investigations several businesses closed down or went out OF BUSINESS shortly thereafter including many popular local watering holes like Hooters and Joe's Bar & Grill which continued operations until 1984 when they converted into apartments... fountain hills lost its main shopping center - Main Street - circa 1980 via annexation by neighboring Scottsdale - but regained some prominence within Arizona grocery store industry through redevelopment efforts spearheaded by current Mayor Donny Youngblood along With new development taking place adjacent to current City Hall Park/Shopping Center off McClintock Boulevard." Today much like then "the largely agricultural focus attracted ranchers who farmed hay, oats and other ground crops," while also attracting professionals such as doctors and dentists who needed close access to hospitals both inside Tucson AND Phoenix; this mixture led eventually to consolidation among these professional classes followed subsequently by another wave of newcomers drawn primarily from higher income backgrounds looking for starter homes closer to services than commuting distance required—resulting today’s “ghetto” lifestyle endemic among many well-to-do residents."
