Fountain Hills, AZ is a small town located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was founded in 1912 by ranchers who named it after the Fountain of Youth, which they had seen in Mexico City. The original settlers weremostly farmers and homesteaders. In the early years, there were only a few homes and no public schools. But over time, Fountain Hills grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its location close to major highways. Today, the community has more than 3,000 residents and is home to several businesses including a hospital, a library, and an amusement park. Despite its size, Fountain Hills has always been an active community that has played an important role in Phoenix's history. In 1912, two brothers named John and Harry Fountain began farming in what is now Fountain Hills. They soon realized that they had found a valuable mineral deposit at nearby Cave Creek but did not have any way to get their land developed because of lack of transportation or money. So they started selling shares in their farm to other farmers for $1 each. This gave them the necessary financial resources to start developing their land into a successful agricultural community. Over time, they added other businesses such as grain elevators and stores until they had a thriving commercial district with several dozen buildings downtown. The first school in Fountain Hills was built on Church Street near present-day Arizona State University in 1914; it was one of several schools built around this time as part ofPhoenix's expanding educational infrastructure (see also: Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). By 1925 there were ten high schools within five miles of Phoenix; three years later all but one were replaced by county-operated high schools (see also: Phoenix Public Schools). In 1957 both Mesa Community College (now Mesa Community College District) and Arizona State University moved from Tempe to Sunnyside along I-10; at this point mostPhoenix students attended these institutions rather than private universities or mainstream colleges outside Phoenix proper (see also: Tempe Downtown Development Authority). During these years many prominent people – such as writer Ernest Hemingway – lived or workedin Fountain Hills including his son Donny Hemingway Jr., who became mayor of Phoenix from 1954 through 1960 during Mayor Phil Radel’s term of office ( see also: Timeline - History Of Phoenix ). After World War II ended hostilities between America's allies and Japan ledto increased trade opportunities throughout Asia so industry mushroomed throughout central America resultingin rapid population growth especially across southern Arizona typical tree fruit crops like avocado gradually replaced hand grown fruits production thanks Arbuckle Fruit Growers Cooperative Federation AFL CIO Agreement with government quota program new dams were constructedand irrigation systems brought online while factories produced goods essential for post war reconstruction
