Fountain Hills is a city in Coconino County, Arizona, United States. The population was 9,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. As of 2000, about 41% of the population was Hispanic or Latino. The name "Fountain Hills" comes from nearby Apache National Forest and Havasu Lake which are both named for mineral water sources that were popular with residents in the 1800s. The first people to live in Fountain Hills were American Indians who started trading with Mexico near present-day Apache Junction in 1859. In 1868, US surveyor George Wright founded a small town called Globe Hill on land he had purchased from the Apaches east of Apache Junction as part of Treaty 7. On November 12, 1870, Wright organized a group of settlers to form the first municipality in Coconino County when they voted to incorporate as a town under the name Globe Hill with John Nolen as its first mayor and six other citizens serving as trustees. The incorporation document stated: "We recommend that this place be called Fountain Hills because many springs abound here which give drink to all kinds." In 1905, after years of planning by several community members including developer Harry Weyerhaeuser and Mayor James Ketchum Sr., Fountain Hills Golf Course was completed and opened to play by professional golfersiphoning tournaments from nearby Scottsdale Municipal Golf Course; it became one of only two courses within metro Phoenix (the other being Scottsdale) where professionals could play without having to travel outside their home area. As Fountain Hills grew wealthier and more fashionable than Globe Hill due largely to its location near major metropolitan areas such as Phoenix and Tucson - becoming known for luxurious homes developments such as Deer Valley Ranch - local politicians began referring to it simply as "Fountainshille". In 1916 Fountainshire incorporated under Arizona law but continued using Globe Hill's name until 1940 when voters approved changing it back to Fountain Hills Township pursuant to an act passed by then-Governor Phil Blythe; however, Fountainshire reverted back again to Globe Hill after almost forty years until 1985 when they finally changed their name back once again (to its current form) following passage by then-Governor Janet Napolitano into law following her appointment as director general for Communities & Economic Development within Arizonan Department Of Planning Today's economy is based largely on services industry although some manufacturing has been revived around base metals processing products used particularly among defense contractors located just south of downtown Mesa In recent decades there have been efforts made by developers including Harry Weyerhaeuser III (founder/CEO), David DeAngelo (President & CEO), Dave Ramsey Jr., Jerry Mossberg (Chairman emeritus) – all natives or residents – along with others associated with downtown Mesa [such as Tom Dooley], Bob Heifetz and Donny Eckhardt[1] –to revive what was once one of Phoenix' most vibrant neighborhoods though still very much grounded in service industries which employ over 60% of workforce growth since 2000 reflectingPhoenixDowntownStudio model’s success story throughout region
