Fountain Hills is a small town in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Fountain Hills is located on the edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area and falls within the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale combined statistical area. The name "Fountain Hills" was given to the town by General George W. Armstrong in honor of his friend and military commander John Sutter who had built a ranch there in 1875. The town was originally named Apache Junction but changed to Fountain Hills because of its natural springs which were abundant then and still are today. The Springerville post office opened in 1907, one year after Fountain Hills itself did. In 1923, a water tower became operational for use by residents of neighboring towns such as Scottsdale and Mesa when they joined together to form the Valley Cities Water District. On November 15, 1924 voters approved an ordinance designating that alluvial goldmining areas lying east of Interstate 10 should be annexed into Phoenix so that these mines could be taken advantage of for water supply purposes only; this annexation created much resentment among miners living west of I-10 who felt they were being taken advantage of without their consent or compensation. During World War II, Fountain Hills served as home to two American airfields used by bombing groups based in Clark Field and Love Field respectively across from downtown Phoenix proper (the same fields where Republic Airlines now operates). In February 1957, it was announced that Arizona's only nuclear power plant would opening up just outside of Fountain Hills; however due to Expo '68 riots erupting throughout the region this never happened and instead reactor number 3 became operational at Plant Site 2 south of Mesa in Tempe instead with about 1/3rdths full occupancy having been reached before it shut down on July 4th 1979 due to vandalism concerns from local youth associated with Expo '68 culture Rex Tillerson started working for ExxonMobil Company History & Museum adjacent to nearby Camelback Lake
