Fountain Hills, Arizona is a city of over 100,000 people located in the Phoenix metro area. It is the home to Maricopa County, one of the most populous counties in Arizona and home to some of the biggest names in business and politics. The city has been nicknamed "The City by the Water" for its location on either side of Salt River Indian School. The city was founded by pioneers who arrived from Illinois in 1867 and was named after Fountain Hill, a hill in downtown Chicago that had been donated by George H.W. Forbes (father of Microsoft founder Bill Gates). In 1912, Fountain Hills became an independent municipality and was incorporated as a town. In 1938 it became a city when it annexed part of neighboring Mesa. In 1986 it joined with Phoenix to form Phoenix-Maricopa-Phoenix Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The MSA has a population of over 1 million people and covers all or portions of seven counties: Maricopa, Pinal, Coconino, Yuma, Apacheland, Paradise Valley/Gilbert Heights/ Desert View/Chandler Heights/Northeast Scottsdale/Southwest Chandler. In 1992-1993 two high capacity kit developers were established within Fountain Hills; both companies were later dissolved but left their high capacity kits legacy behind: AquaTronics Corporation and American Composites Incorporated (ACI).
