Fountain Hills is a city in Arizona, United States. The population was 25,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Fountain Hills is located on the east side of Phoenix and lies within the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale Combined Statistical Area. As of 2013, Fountain Hills had a median household income of $92,292 and an unemployment rate of 3%. The first people to live in what is now Fountain Hills were Mexican settlers who came to this area in 1847. A post office called "Fountain Hills" was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1903. In 1912, developers built a large shopping mall on the site that became known as "Fountain Hills Mall." The city hall building was also constructed at this time. In 1966, Mesa County annexed part of Fountain Hills and made it its own town; however, due to population growth within Mesa County over time, Fountain Hills has remained an incorporated city with its own government since 1974. In December 1986 fire destroyed most of downtown Phoenix which caused heavy damage to both the mall and businesses inside it; however no one was injured as a result. Six months later another fire occurred which destroyed parts of Mesa but did not damage any buildings within Downtown Phoenix specifically; this event became known as "93 Fire". Fountain Hills is a small city in the Phoenix metropolitan area, located on the east side of Phoenix. The population was 53,713 at the 2010 census. It lies within the Scottsdale-Mesa-Scottsdaleborough school district. Fountain Hills is one of several cities in Arizona that were founded by Mormon settlers during what is known as the Great American Gold Rush of 1849. The city was named for John Fountainebleau, an early settler and founder of what is now Mesa. A company town was developed here in 1864 as part of a larger gold rush effort to find new goldfields in central and southern Arizona. The post office called Fountain Hills "Baldy" after Michael Baldy, an agent with the Central Mining District who had organized some $2 million worth of prospecting rights along I-10 north from Tucson. In 1896, whenWantagh Land Company purchased land WWVA near present day Mesa for $1 million dollars, they renamed their property "Fountain Hills" to reflect their intentions to develop it into a fashionable community with fine homes and fine schools for its citizens and children alike'. The first home built there was on Prospect Road which still exists today as part of Fountain Hills High School's campus. By 1912, over 100 homes had been erected throughout downtown Fountain Hills and many more were being added each year until 1915 when construction stopped due to World War I; however, by 1918, much development had resumed including the erection of hotels and other commercial buildings such as Sears Roebuck & Co.'s flagship store at First Avenue and McDowell Road where it still stands today (now operated by Kmart). During these years there also commenced work on what would become Fountain Hills Arena which would serve as both a sports arena (the original home of Scotts Valley Aquatics) as well as providing living quarters for employees/students at nearby University Of Phoenix Stadium from 1928-1929 before becoming used mostly for exhibitions (e.g., circuses) until renovated in 2002-2003 under then Mayor Phil Gordon's leadership into a world class performing arts venue once again serving Scotts Valley residents and visitors alike!
