Today's history can be traced back to 1912 when ranchers Harry and Nora Fountain founded what would become known as Fountain Hills after purchase of 6 acres (2 ha) of undeveloped land northeast of Apache Pass along State Route 9 about 12 miles north-northwest of Phoenix via stagecoach service from Tucson on October 15, 1912 (the day following President William McKinley's visit to that region). With few other settlements existing within that radius at that time, this grant helped establish Wichita Falls Colony Agricultural Society with homesteaders Harry Harkins (founder), Johnnie Warrick & family members Wanda Harkins & family members Gertrude Fenton (wife), Alfred Crosby & wife Edith Crosby Potts(daughter)), Dolphus Cooke(son-in-law) & Edwin Reeves(son) with intentions to raise crops around Apache Peak "for food for our people" - future residents who now populate much larger areas surrounding Phoenix today were not initially included in this development plan but eventually did so through annexation or purchase over time including parts eastward including Mesa Verde Rancho Niguel where current Scottsdale resides Today it can still be seen driving down I-10 between Scottsdale Junction north then east then south towards Phx finally entering into town just past 4th Ave 3rd St
