Fountain Hills, Arizona is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 31,541 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Phoenix and is surrounded by the Phoenix metropolitan area on three sides. The city's first post office opened in 1885. In 1903 it became a town and in 1912 it became a city. Fountain Hills was named after John Fountaine Fountain, who donated land for the community. The name "Fountain Hills" was changed to "Phoenix" in 1944 when Phoenix Municipal District No. 1 annexed part of Fountain Hills east of Camelback Road. As residents moved into developed areas outside of downtownPhoenix they began creating new neighborhoods around their homes and businesses; one such neighborhood being North Park which bordered Scottsdale on the north side and Chandler on the south side with South Park located between those two communities to the east and west across Camelback Rd., providing much needed open space for people to play as well as grow food crops etc.; this also created what is now known as Little Italys/East Valley Neighborhoods which encompasses some of Fountain Hills most original development dating back to that time including: wards 9-13 (the old part of Scottsdale), 15-17 (Chandler) & 19-21 (northwest Phoenix). This neighborhoods continued until annexation by Chandler in 1961 which resulted in its closure due to redevelopment plans for that area only partially realized - current day North Park still contains significant amounts of old McIntyre home gardens from pre annexation days right up until today

The first white person known to live in Fountain Hills was Pinal Indian Chief Manuela Ajeno in 1847. In 1868, John Wesley Powell named Fountain Hills after George Washington Fountain who had donated land for a park near Phoenix. The first post office was established in 1870 with Wm Harker as its first director. The town of Fountain Hills was founded on February 14th, 1912 when it annexed part of neighboring Glendale. On December 1st of that year, Mayor Harry Sink announced that he would not seek re-election because he did not want to create an appearance of conflict between his home city and this new town which he considered his personal fiefdom; Fountain Hills would become an independent municipality on January 1st 1913 under then-Mayor Harry Gage’s leadership In 1933 due to growing concerns about public health conditions in Phoenix caused by dust storms originating from Mexico City – particularly during Canopy Tourist Development season – Mayor Harry Sink sponsored legislation creating a new city government separate from Phoenix called “Fountain Hills Municipal Utility District” or FPSD for short On October 5th 1938 Mayor Sink issued proclamation no longer recognizing fpsd as a municipal corporation but instead as an incorporated village As part of changes mandated by state law enacted following Arizona Statehood (October 15th 1912), all municipalities within Pima County were merged into one large county on July 1st 1928 including Fountain Hills The population growth rates during World War II were much slower than expected given expectations for a larger military presence in what had been traditionally an agricultural county On November 10th 1951 voters ratified an amendment authorizing annexation into Tempe and Mesa Counties resulting in 2nd Ward Alderman Hensley being elected mayoralty from that ward effective December 21st 1951 untilJanuary 3rd 1952 when incumbent Alderman Leroy Jethro Neal took office

Steele who arrived about 1856 on horseback from Apache Junction, Arizona Territory. He named his land "Fountain Hills" after a natural spring near his home located within what is now Fountain Hills. The town of Fountain Hills was founded by local citizens on November 3, 1912 when the US Army Corps of Engineers drained part of the Gila River for irrigation purposes and built a dam across it to control its flowage creating an artificial lake which served as Fountain Hills' main water supply until 1924 when it was diverted into Cottonwood Creek For more than twenty years till 1970s much of downtown Fountain Hill's Main Street were destroyed by fire caused by illegal burning that took place during Prescott's drought years while business owners tried to rebuild they did not have access to insurance so they could rebuild In March 1984 residents started a movement called "Save Our Streets" with the goal of keeping downtown streetscape clean, free from litter or graffiti either created or allowed by City Officials; vandalism being rampant on these public areas had become an all too common occurrence Many people joined forces to try and change this trend starting Spray painting campaign # CleanItUpFountainHills began throughout the Downtown Business District
